Faculty of Biology

Founded in 1931 as the Biology Section of the Department of Chemistry and Biology, the Faculty of Biology is one of the oldest academic subdivisions of Dagestan State University.

In 1957, after the Teacher’s Training Institute had been reorganized into Dagestan State University, the Faculty of Natural Sciences majoring in Chemistry and Biology was established. In 1964, the faculty with its departments of zoology and botany formed a separate academic unit of the university.

The faculty is headed by Isuev Ali Radjabovich, Doctor of Biology, Professor, Honoured Reseacher of Dagestan, member of the Russian Academy of Economy. The faculty’s academic staff comprises 55 members among whom there are 15 professors and holders of doctoral degrees and 40 associate professors and holders of candidate degrees.

The faculty is a major center of learning and research. It trains specialists in various fields of theoretical and applied biology. The faculty comprises 8 departments: Department of Zoology; Department of Botany, Department of Ichtiology, Department of Soil Science, Department of Plant Physiology and Evolution Theory, Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics, Department of Forestry, Department of Physiology and Histology. We also have our own greenhouse, biological museum, botanical museum, herbarium, etc.

The Faculty of Biology offers full-time and part-time courses.

Full-time students are trained in the following areas:

  1. biologist, teacher of biology

  2. aquatic bioresources and acquiculture

  3. biochemistry

  4. forestry

Part-time students are trained in the following areas:

  1. biologist, teacher of biology

  2. forestry

Our alumni are sought after by different agencies, research institutes, higher educational establishments, fish factories, land committees, agricultural and forestry administrations.
